Originally created by Oji Hiroi, Sakura Wars debuted in 1996 on the Sega Saturn, featuring a distinctive coalescence of tactical RPG gameplay with visual novel and dating-sim elements.

Set in a fictionalized Taishō-era Japan, the series follows groups of women with spiritual powers who pilot steam-powered mechs. The franchise expanded over the years with multiple sequels, spin-offs, anime adaptations, and stage productions.

Sega originally developed it in collaboration with Red Entertainment before the series went on hiatus in 2008. It later returned with a reboot developed solely by Sega, driven in part by continued fan interest.
