Sony CFO Lin Tao has revealed during the console maker’s latest financial results overnight that development of its next-generation console, PS6, is “progressing as scheduled,” with Sony looking to make “solid progress” over the course of its next business year.
Looking ahead to the next fiscal year, we aim to continue to enhance user engagement and further strengthen monetization through the release of strong titles and the expansion of our service. We also intend to make solid progress in preparing for the next-generation platform.
From next fiscal year onward, there will be investment in the new platform. For future growth, we have to attach great importance to a new platform and make the necessary investments for that. We have to support the soundness of our platform and think about how rationally we can invest in that platform. We will announce that at an appropriate time in the future.
The last time that Sony made any comments about the PS6 was back in August, when the company’s CEO, Hiroki Totoki, stated that the company had yet to make a decision on the release date for the new machine. Sony announced during its financial results that the PS5 has shipped 97.9 million units worldwide, a figure that is down 0.9 million year-on-year.
While Sony hasn’t shared much about the PS6, that hasn’t stopped hardware insiders like Kepler_L2 from spilling the beans. For example, the tipster recently stated that the Bill of Materials (BoM) for Sony’s new console is around $200 lower than Magnus, which the hardware for the new Xbox console. Even so, Kepler_L2 claimed that it costs Sony about $960 to manufacture its new system, so it’s not going to be cheap when it eventually hits stores.
